The troll guarding the entrance to the castle was an intimidating sight. It was a bulky green creature with pointed ears and a face contorted in a permanent scowl. His beady white eyes gleamed in the sunlight and he was dressed in armour and leather clothing. He stood guard, with heavy weapons in his sights, blocking the way to the castle and daring not to interfere. His presence inspired a sense of wonder and terror in all who saw him: there were tales among commoners and travellers of him catching and eating those who tried to enter the castle. He was the perfect image of a magical troll; the way you always imagined him when your mother read you bedtime stories about dragons, princesses, knights and treasure.
